In the Southwest of Colombia, there is a city where salsa dancing exists in a form that is unique in its boldness and energy, yet pure in its tradition and style. Cali, known as the world’s salsa dancing capital, and its people (referred to as Caleños) own this iconic dancing style. The city has… Continue reading Short Film: FROM HEAVEN IS CALI, 12min., Columbia Documentary/Drama
Author: femalefilmfestival
The irony of this festival is that its goal is to not be around in 5 years time. To eventually not be relevant because there is zero need to have a festival geared for female talent and female stories because the stories presented in Hollywood and around the world are a balanced showcase of the human experience from both sexes.
Our goal is to achieve a lot of success and then fold into oblivion simply because there is no need for this festival.
This festival was created by the FEEDBACK Film & Writing Festival as a simple reaction to a strong need to showcase female talent from around the world in a more profound way.
When putting together the weekly festival, the administration noticed a lack of a female presence in the stories being shown at the festival.
A classic example and analogy to the frustration is how the festival noticed that even the smaller roles in a screenplay were written for a man to play. There was zero reason for this in many stories. How a police officer, or a political campaign manager, for example with 3-4 lines in a screenplay was a "HE" character. Why? And these are the screenplays written by the winners! The talented one who have obtained agents and have began/beginning their careers as a writer.

Ridley Scott’s “Alien” (1979) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
Academy Award wins: Best Visual Effects Inducted into the National Film Registry: 2002 “In space, nobody can hear you scream”. It’s one of the most iconic taglines in cinema history— an exercise in pulpy brilliance that perfectly encapsulates the movie it accompanies. That movie is, of course, the 1979 science fiction classic ALIEN. ALIEN needs […]… Continue reading Ridley Scott’s “Alien” (1979) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” (1982) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
Inducted into the National Film Registry: 1993 As I sit here writing this essay, it is the year 2018, in the city of Los Angeles, California. It’s a sunny, slightly chilly morning. When I look out my window, I see the stubby trees, freshly-watered green lawns, and the stately bungalows of Larchmont— a sleepy residential […]… Continue reading Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” (1982) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
Terrence Malick’s “The Thin Red Line” (1998) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
Notable Festivals: Berlin (Golden Bear) Inducted into the Criterion Collection: 2010 It seems that no discussion of director Terrence Malick’s life and career can be made without reference to “the absence”— a prolonged period of seeming inactivity that has taken on the same air of mythic folklore that marks his own films. Every successful filmmaker […]… Continue reading Terrence Malick’s “The Thin Red Line” (1998) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
Ridley Scott’s “Black Rain” (1989) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
When the cinematic community talks about director Sir Ridley Scott in the context of influential filmmaking, they usually mention the hit singles: ALIEN (1979), BLADE RUNNER (1982), THELMA & LOUISE (1991), GLADIATOR (2000), to name a few. Very rarely do they dive into the deep cuts, but it’s there where one can find some of […]… Continue reading Ridley Scott’s “Black Rain” (1989) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
Ridley Scott’s “Thelma & Louise” (1991) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
Inducted into the National Film Registry in 2016 Notable Festivals: Cannes (Out of Competition) A good friend once likened a director’s cultural relevance to a tuning fork— after so many strikes, the fork can begin straying from perfect pitch. Similarly, a director can deliver a number of films that strike a chord with audiences before […]… Continue reading Ridley Scott’s “Thelma & Louise” (1991) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
Ridley Scott’s “1492: Conquest Of Paradise” (1992) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
I can still remember that song— the one we were compelled by our grade school teachers to sing every year on one particular day in October. “In August 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue”. It’s understandable that the story of Christopher Columbus, the famed Spanish explorer, would be simplified and sanitized for elementary-aged minds as […]… Continue reading Ridley Scott’s “1492: Conquest Of Paradise” (1992) — THE DIRECTORS SERIES
